Hi everyone,

How are we nearly into July?! It’s been another active week at HSC – we’ve had Training, our Summer Pursuit Race and Social, a Downriver race to Thurne, Paddleboarding and more! You can read last week’s race report here.

This weekend is Keelboat Weekend (you can see the full programme below) and we will be holding a social ‘A Night at the Movies’ with archive film and refreshments afterwards – more information in Peter’s report.

Commodore’s Update

Yet another week has flown past, the weekend had the Downriver race, I was told it was a windy affair & quick race with the wind that built up as the day went on.

I was away so missed the Pursuit race & social, well done to Anya and James.

Abbey represented HSC in the ITCA NS5 EOS Championships at Rutland Water Sailing Club, they were on the water for around 5 hours each day, but managing to get the 6 scheduled races in, with Sunday being very lively with the building winds. Well done to Abbey. I was the Course Safety Leader (CSL) for the event, being in charge & responsible for the whole of the safety fleet for the event.

Monday was paddleboarding again, where fun was had by all, with the juniors getting Roger Pettit rather soaked when he was ambushed & ended up having an evening swim.

Tuesday I attended the Race Management meeting, with the weed issue on the broad under review.

Horning Week will soon be here, so help will be needed to get things all ready & during the week.

This weekend it’s down to Poole Yacht Club, Abbey received a special “invitation only” by ITCA - GBR to a weekend of training with top coaches, representing HSC.

Don’t forget the Strawberries & Champagne event @ the Club on Friday 07th July for in aid of the Benjamin Foundation, tickets available from Mandi Goshawk

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Vice Commodore’s Clew

Last weekend we had our Summer and Wine barbeque at the Club in ideal conditions, although slightly less ideal for the Pursuit Races. Our bbq chef was Roger Pettitt, who produced some really great sausages and burgers provided by the Fields family. Vikki Gittins and the galley crew made some tasty salad side dishes to accompany it. The bar was open for the first time this season and by this weekend we should have made some improvements, like colder beers and wine and a better location (inside the clubhouse).

This weekend is Keelboat Weekend and race details will be found elsewhere in this edition of Jibsheet. For our social event, on this occasion we are running A Night at the Movies starting at 1900 (7 pm) on Saturday 01 July in the clubhouse. The bar will be open from 1830 and there will be hot dogs and popcorn to purchase at £5 per head. The films are from the Club archive so you may see yourself from the

past.

Next week I expect to be putting out details of all the social events we have planned for Horning Week, some of which will require pre-booking but which will all be inexpensive as they will mostly involve in house catering and activities (in keeping with the times). You will find an outline of the social programme in the White Book.

Rear Commodore’s Update

We would like to ask members to keep their ears to the ground as we will soon be asking for volunteers to help erect the summer marquees, and to carry out other ground works to ensure that the Club is looking in tip top condition for our Regatta. We would also like to wish good luck to everyone participating in Keelboat weekend!

Many thanks,

Lorraine & Izzy

Galley News

As this weekend sees racing focused on the keelboats, I am taking the opportunity to have the weekend off from galley duties. The galley will be in the very capable hands of Ann and our lovely volunteers, so have a great weekend! I will be putting up a rota for Horning week soon, so please sign up, as we are very reliant on volunteers to make the week a success. Even if you can only do an hour, it makes a big difference.

This weekend’s activities

This weekend is Keelboat weekend, which is currently scheduled to take place on the River (Saturday afternoon) and Broad (Sunday). The Race Management Committee recently met (this week) and in light of the changing weed situation on the Broad, agreed that the decision as to whether to race on the Broad can be made by the OOD on the day – so there is a chance this programme may adapt.

The current race schedule is as follows:

14.05 Yeomans

14.10 Rebels

14.15 Yare & Bures

At least one Saturday race (if sailed) to count.

By way of reminder, you can download the full racing programme from the HSC website here.

On Monday 3rd July we will continue our Paddleboarding sessions. Last Monday saw a trip to Dydler’s Mill (upriver).

All are welcome at these informal evenings, where we usually go for a relatively short paddle and just enjoy each others’ company. If you’d like to come down but don’t have a board, please get in touch and we’ll see what we can do. We start at 6pm.

Champagne & Strawberries event in aid of the Benjamin Foundation

On Friday 7th July there will be a champagne & strawberries event hosted at Horning Sailing Club in aid of the Benjamin Foundation. We hope that you will support this worthy cause. Tickets are available from Mandi Goshawk (01692 630974 or ajgoshawk@yahoo.co.uk)

Helm & Crew Opportunities

Don’t forget that I am co-ordinating helms and crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water now, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to coordinate these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!

Could you contribute to Jibsheet?

We are looking for members both young and old to make occasional or regular contributions to Jibsheet – whether it be your sailing journey so far, achievements or experiences, thoughts on your sailing activities, suggestions for what you’d like to see – or simply information you’d like to share with others – please contact Holly if you would like to know more - news@horning-sailing.club

Easy Fundraising

If you haven’t signed up yet to support the Club through online shopping, you can do so here at https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/horningsc/ - a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in this way!
