Hi everyone,

Over the past few days, activities have been focused on getting ready for next week’s Regatta Week, with preparations in full swing. We have several members sailing at Regattas – many at Wroxham this week (more in Lorraine’s report below), and Abbey representing HSC in the Topper Worlds in Ireland (see Will’s report). Club activities have been a little quieter due to members being busy with different activities, hence neither Sundown nor paddleboarding took place this week, but we look forward to returning to these after Horning Week. Club racing on the river took place on Sunday, it was another breezy and eventful day – you can read the report here.

Horning Week is almost here (Saturday 29th July-Friday 4th August). Don’t forget that you can check out our guide to Regatta Week, which you can download here. You can also pre-enter your races here. Please sign up for a duty if at all possible – you can either do this via the sign-up sheet in the Clubhouse or by emailing Anne (secretary@horning-sailing.club).

We are also looking forward to seeing many of you at Presidents’ Day on Thursday 3rd August (all welcome) - we would be grateful for RSVPs by the end of today please (more information below). Please note that our usual club activities, i.e. Sundown Series, Paddleboarding and Training will all take a break over Horning Week.

Remember that if you would like to let your family and friends know about Horning Regatta Week and encourage them to come down, we’ve created a poster summarising what goes on - please feel free to share this with them.

Commodore’s Update

This weekend see’s the start of Horning week, the Flag Officers look forward to seeing you all, we hope to see a good turnout in the fleets and let’s hope the weather is good to us. We would love to see friends & family come along and join in throughout the week.

Abbey & myself are currently away in Cork, Ireland, where Abbey is representing HSC in the ITCA Topper World Championships. After the two day qualification series to see whether you qualified for Gold, Silver or Bronze Fleet, it’s fantastic to report that Abbey qualified for the Gold Fleet, where today she started 3 days of Championship racing. Today was wet & windy, but 3 races were completed, good luck to Abbey.

Since arriving last Thursday, I have been involved with the chief measurer & a small team checking & certifying over 260 Toppers, then out on the water on the safety fleet and also on shore duties.

I look forward to seeing you all from Sunday onwards, I hope you all have a great Regatta week, see the programme for full details.

Vice-Commodore’s Clew

This week I have made 2 trips to the Broad and can confirm that the weed is no longer a problem. I went round the whole perimeter of the Broad and saw no significant weed, and yesterday I sailed on the Broad with no restriction (except for a lack of wind). So we are go for the Club Regatta on the Broad this weekend as the prelude to Horning Week. The race details are in the White Book and probably elsewhere in Jibsheet. For this event and most of Horning Week the Flag Officers are your race officials and we look forward to seeing large numbers of you out on the water. You will need your wet weather kit but there is enough wind forecast.

For the social events each evening we have a varied programme, of which you should all be aware by now. There are big notices in the Clubhouse and we need your names on the list for the Tex-Mex food on Friday (or you can email me). I already have your bookings for the fish (or sausage) and chips on Monday and we can take payment at the galley if you have not already paid by BACS. We have plenty of gas to fire up the barbies for you to use and we have the bar well stocked. This weekend bring some nibbles for Saturday evening and make sure you have your big fancy hats ready on Sunday for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party as there will be prizes.

Finally, make sure you do not miss the chance to be a Vice President for the day at Thursday’s Horning Town Regatta. You should have received an invite to make a donation (to help pay for the silver spoon prizes) and attend the lunchtime reception at the Club. It is always a very well attended occasion and I can confirm that the wines, which we were invited to taste last weekend in the clubhouse, are of excellent quality. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Rear Commodore’s Update

Wednesday I spent the day at NBYC Wroxham week with team HSC, which consisted of James and Edward Street, Lily, Jasmine and Rose Herring Hamish and Xanthe Harmer as well as Harrison Ryder.

They spent the week sailing in a variety of boats from Yeomans, Punts, Lasers, Toppers, Stars and even a River Cruiser. They represented HSC, as a well mannered group who demonstrate fantastic team work. I am very proud.

Next week will be Horning week and I look forward to seeing everyone down at the Club. Everyone is welcome so spread the word.

Lorraine Street

We had a great work party last Saturday with an amazing turnout, those who came down to lend a hand you know who you are and we are very grateful!
Putting on my instructor’s hat I would like to wish the group of juniors taking part in Wroxham week the best of luck for the rest of the week and thank them for representing our club so well. We look forward to being able to host Wroxham and Snowflakes during Horning week and hope everyone will make sure their time with us is enjoyed.
We can’t wait to see you all next week, please keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

This week’s activities

This weekend sees Regatta Weekend kick off on Saturday afternoon. The Vice Commodore took a team to the Broad, and decided that this will be suitable for racing, so the activities will follow the race schedule in the White Book.

Monday-Friday racing will take place on the river, programme as per the White Book.

A few reminders:

Charity Day – Horning Week

Several of you will distinctly remember a dinosaur running the line during Horning Week two years ago (and no, I’m not being rude to the Commodore!) – but it was all in aid of charity, with a dress up day to raise funds. This year, we will be having Wednesday as our charity day to raise funds for the RNLI. Please come and sail/take part in fancy dress (as whatever character you wish!) and help us to raise funds for this very worthy cause!

Presidents’ Day during Regatta Week

Hopefully you have received your invitation to come and join us for a special Reception on Thursday 4th August at 12pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and we would be delighted if you would accept the invitation to become a Vice President for the day and to enjoy the event. Not only is it a great opportunity to catch up with friends, but it keeps the tradition of the Horning Week spoons going, which are awarded to our sailors during the day. We would appreciate an RSVP by Thursday 27 July please and the Justgiving link (for your kind donations) is here.

Helm & Crew Opportunities

I am co-ordinating helms and crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water now, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to help with these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!

Could you contribute to Jibsheet?

We are looking for members both young and old to make occasional or regular contributions to Jibsheet – whether it be your sailing journey so far, achievements or experiences, thoughts on your sailing activities, suggestions for what you’d like to see, or simply information you’d like to share with others - please let me know.  You can contact me at news@horning-sailing.club
