Hi everyone,

Welcome to this week's Jibsheet - it's been another busy week at HSC with training and racing activities. You can read our race report for Sunday's sailing here.

There’s plenty more to look forward to, with a work party this Saturday from 10am, and racing returning to Hoveton Little Broad this Sunday (see the race programme below) – don’t forget that we will follow the condensed 3 back-to-back race series, with starts at 3 minute intervals.

We also have just over a week to go to the 62nd Three Rivers Race (where has the time gone?!) – there’s also a plea below from Karen Fields for help with the Galley at the Three Rivers, so please get in touch with Karen if you can help.

Read on for lots more news below…

Commodore’s Update

With hours of sunshine, the wind lively, I hope you all had a great weekend. It was good to hear that more boats are getting out and racing. This weekend sees the racing on the Broad, the weather forecast looks good.

Our thoughts are with Jeremy & Rosemary Tusting, also Claire, after the loss of Hugh Tusting last weekend. Hugh was one of our long-standing members and for those who knew him, Hugh was a larger than life character who would gladly pass on his advice and wisdom to young and old, he will be missed.

The Three Rivers Race is nearly here; if you haven’t put your name down to help please do so, it takes the pressure off others and what’s more it’s fun too, getting to know other members of the Club. It’s our premier event, so let’s do what King Charles promotes, “ Volunteering”. We will be having a work party to get everything ready on Saturday, please come & help, see more information below.

We have the Strawberries & Champagne event shortly at the club run by Mandi Goshawk. More details to follow. This is a charity event to raise money for the Benjamin Foundation, please support the event, a very good cause, for tickets contact Mandi.

I was away at the weekend with Abbey at Whitstable Sailing Club, a lovely setting, where Abbey was competing in the ITCA NS4. On Saturday, although the sun was out, the wind was gusting around 25 mph - the top end of the speed for the class, which, along with the strong tidal flow with the swell /waves around 1.5 metres, meant all racing was cancelled. But Sunday saw slightly better conditions and all Toppers were launched. Three races were completed, with the sailors on the water for over 5 hours. Abbey said the swell / waves just got bigger as the day went on and as the tide came in, boats at times looked airborne. After completing all races Abbey came overall 25th out of about 80 boats, with places of 21st, 11th & 6th being achieved - well done to Abbey and all the sailors who braved the very challenging conditions.

I also received an award for volunteering from ITCA at the prizegiving,

For Topper sailors who wish to try these events there is a local event at Snettisham Beach Sailing Club - see their website or ITCA’s website for details.

I hope you all have a good weekend and enjoy our spell of good weather while it lasts.

Take Care

Will – Commodore HSC

Vice Commodore’s Clew

Only a week to go now until 3RR. We still need you to help tidying the Club surrounds to make sure the Club looks its best for our flagship event of the year. I made a start on cutting back grass and weeds in the car park last weekend but we need to do the same across the river. The paving stones by the bridge will need some re-laying to make them more even. Our new Rear Commodores, Lorraine and Izzy, will be taking the lead on work parties now, so come and meet them this Saturday for the pre 3RR work party at 1000. I am doing my bit on Thursday as I am away on Saturday.

The Training Centre has some exciting news this week as we have just acquired a Wayfarer dinghy to add to the training fleet. It looks in great condition and is renowned as one of the most popular sailing school boats around. Might even attract some new members. Well done Andy and Kevin who delivered her from Wroxham last week.

Looking ahead to this weekend – Sunday 28th May, which sees racing on the Broad, following Programme C.

We will be continuing to follow the 6/3 start sequence (instead of 10/5 minutes). The aim of this is to reduce time waiting on the Broad – but it will mean that some starts will be a little earlier, so please arrive in plenty of time for the tow to the Broad.

The start sequence is as follows:

Series 1:

10.30am       Reedlings

10.33am       Yeomans

10.36am       Rebels

10.39am       Yares & Bures

10.42am       Juniors & Allcomers “B” & “C”

10.51am       Cruisers (continue into series 2)

Series 2: Start 11.15am earliest

Series 3: Start 12.00pm earliest

The later series will start at a time determined by the OOD. Starts will be separated by a 3 minute interval, except Cruisers with a 9 minute interval.

After racing on Sunday, we have one of our ‘Social Sundays’ and it would be great to see members continuing to enjoy the Club into the afternoon. So why not come down, enjoy yourself, have a social sail/paddleboard if you wish – and just enjoy spending time with friends – especially as the forecast looks so promising!

By way of reminder, you can download the full racing programme from the HSC website here.

Three Rivers Race 2023 – a plea for Galley helpers and race video help required

From Karen Fields:

We have done well with our amazing volunteers but still need a couple of people to cover the 2-5 shift on Sunday morning. Ideal for insomniacs!!

If you can help, please sign up in the Clubhouse.

You may also remember that last year Keith Palmer made 3RR the Movie 2022 which included clips from the public. This year, he is seeking more footage – see how you can get involved here

Training Update – from Andy Barnham

A reminder that there will be no training next Thursday 1st June due to the build-up for the 3 Rivers Race.

Last Saturday Kevin and I took Breeze, the first of the Training Centre Rebels, for its shakedown sail, ready to start taster sessions after the 3 Rivers Race.

Helms & Crew opportunities

Don’t forget that I am co-ordinating helms & crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to coordinate these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!

Easy Fundraising

If you haven’t signed up yet to support the Club through online shopping, you can do so here at https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/horningsc/ - a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in this way!
