Hi everyone,

It’s been a very busy week at Horning Sailing Club, with the start of both our Sundown Series on Saturday afternoon, Club racing Sunday on the Broad (you can read the report here) and Paddleboarding commencing on Monday. We’ve also had a sailing taster on Tuesday, and training on Thursday evening.

This weekend we have lots more to look forward to, including our Pursuit Race and Summer Social on Saturday afternoon/evening (don’t forget there is no Sundown Series this week), a Downriver Race to Thurne on Sunday, and Paddleboarding continues on Monday. The forecast looks fantastic over the weekend, so we hope to see you then!

Message from the Commodore

We have sadly heard the news that Snowflake Sailing Club will not be joining us over the Winter period. Our Management Committee will be meeting shortly to discuss what this means for us and we will update our members soon. We wish Snowflake Sailing Club all the best for their future endeavours.

Commodore’s Update

Last weekend saw the return of the Sundown series, a beautiful sunny evening with reasonable wind. It was a good turnout, which had a mix of Toppers, Splashes, Lasers, a Norfolk dinghy, and also a Rebel. The Toppers saw Primrose & Xanthe try their hand at racing, both doing extremely well with some coaching from Jasmine. When we got to the 4th Race a bit of additional fun was installed, sailors had to round buoy 5 then turn round & reverse over the finish line, including the Rebel. During this race some interesting tactics were employed, with some dinghies doubling up. Following the racing it saw the juniors jumping in the water for some frolics, good fun was had.

Monday saw the return of paddleboarding - again a good turn out with 16 people & 14 paddleboards, plus two manned safety boats, thanks for all who helped out. During the trip to just past the Ferry Inn, it saw our juniors pulling each other in, also rafting together, with the older participants keeping clear, a great evening of fun with the juniors having some more water frolics when they returned to the Club. Come down & join in the fun. We also will need volunteers to come & help.

Last week there was racing again on the Broad; this proved challenging as the weed wrapped round keels & rudders, also the props of the safety boats. There was also some amusement back at the Club, with one boat being towed back to the Club by the Broads Ranger with a flashing blue light, as it could not sail or steer with the weed that had been picked up whilst racing.

This weekend will also see the Pursuit Race & Social, see Peter’s report.

This weekend I will be away at Rutland Sailing Club where Abbey will be representing HSC in the ITCA Topper NS5 EOS championships.

I hope you all have a great weekend.

Vice Commodore’s Clew

This Saturday we have the Pursuit Races followed by the Summer and Wine barbie, with sausages and burgers. Thank you to all those who have already indicated their intention to attend. It should be a good day. Also, the following weekend is Keelboat Weekend and we have A Night at the Movies for you on the Saturday evening with hot dogs and popcorn, and films from the Club archives (maybe see yourself as you were then).

After all that we will be heading for summer holidays soon and that means Horning Week. We will be giving you more details of the social programme soon, so watch this space and keep the time free.

Rear Commodore’s Update

I would like to start off by saying that I hope all the dads had a lovely Father’s Day last Sunday. I treated my dad to a morning of racing on the Broad and managed to make it special by winning the last race!

It was great to see so many of us out on Sunday and it’s brilliant to see the Club lively with Saturday Sundown Series and Monday Paddle-boarding starting up again along with a Tuesday evening taster session.

A few people have passed on suggestions of areas that will need a tidy up soon so look out for the details of the next work party, hopefully we can make it just as much fun as being on the water.

This weekend’s activities

Saturday 17th June we have our Pursuit Race – more information below from Toby.

On Sunday 18th June there will be a Downriver race to Thurne – the start sequence is in the White Book and there will be a briefing in the Clubhouse at 9.30am. If you intend to take part, it would be appreciated if you could please email racing@horning-sailing.club

By way of reminder, you can download the full racing programme from the HSC website here.

On Monday 26th June we will continue our Paddleboarding sessions. Last week saw 16 paddlers take part for a paddle to the Horning Ferry and back – after which a number of water frolics were enjoyed by the younger members! Quote of the night had to come from James – who was asked “What have you forgotten?” when jumping out of the car and rushing back to the Island – the reply… “Hamish!”

All are welcome at these informal evenings where we usually go for a relatively short paddle and just enjoy each others’ company. If you’d like to come down but don’t have a board, please get in touch and we’ll see what we can do. We start at 6pm.

Spring Regatta Pursuit Race – from Toby Fields

Pursuit Race – Saturday 24th June (briefing 1:30pm)

On Saturday 24th June in the afternoon, we have our annual Pursuit Race Regatta on the river. We will use your HSC handicap to decide how long the race is for you. At the end, the boat that is leading when the time runs out wins the race. The Pursuit race is spectator-friendly with viewing from the club front and no handicaps to worry about.

Dinghies, Keelboats and even the occasional River Cruiser have competed in the past. Younger members need to be comfortable racing alongside larger craft at times, like on a regular Sunday.

We will be running two pursuits, each around 40-50 minutes long depending on class of boat. Entry is free. You will be told your start time when you enter with us on the day.

After the two races are over, at around 17:00, there will be a social event and bbq, tickets and details will be coming up elsewhere. You will need to pre-book food but not entry to the races. The bar will also open in the later afternoon.

I hope to see many different classes represented in this year’s Pursuits. There are also two club trophies that are awarded for these races. Please ask if you have any further questions.

Toby Fields (AOD/Timekeeper)

Champagne & Strawberries event in aid of the Benjamin Foundation

On Friday 7th July there will be a champagne & strawberries event hosted at Horning Sailing Club in aid of the Benjamin Foundation. We hope that you will support this worthy cause. Tickets are available from Mandi Goshawk (01692 630974 or ajgoshawk@yahoo.co.uk)

Helm & Crew Opportunities

Don’t forget that I am co-ordinating helms & crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water now, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to coordinate these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!
