Hi everyone,

We hope that you’ve had a good week. We had another busy one at HSC, with sailing on Sunday in very blustery conditions (it provided a good spectator sport for all those watching on Swan Green) – you can read the race report here. Monday saw a quiet but very peaceful evening paddleboarding, with perfect weather after the storms earlier in the day, followed by a management committee meeting. The Club has continued to be busy with a taster session and training.

Horning Week is almost here (Saturday 29th July-Friday 4th August) and with that in mind, there will be a work party this Saturday (more information below), alongside our usual activities. Don’t forget that you can check out our guide to Regatta Week, which you can download here. We would also like to encourage you to book onto our social events by 24 Jul (by emailing vice-commodore@horning-sailing.club or signing up in the Clubhouse) – there is more information via the poster below and in the guide above. You can also pre-enter your races here. Please sign up for a duty if at all possible – you can either do this via the sign-up sheet in the Clubhouse or by emailing Anne (secretary@horning-sailing.club)

If you’d also like to let your family and friends know about Horning Regatta Week and encourage them to come down, we’ve created a summary poster of what goes on - please feel free to share this with them.

We’re also now into sailing regatta season, with a packed schedule of events across the Broads (and wider afield) over the summer. Good luck to everyone participating in Wroxham Week this week, and to Abbey Penny, sailing in the Topper Worlds in Cork, Ireland – we look forward to hearing all about it.

Commodore’s Update

With Horning week rapidly approaching, preparations are being made in and around the club, your help prior to and during the week would be greatly appreciated.

I have pleasure to announce that the Hancock family has accepted my invitation to be Horning Town Presidents, the donations from members go towards the costs of the spoons and glasses for the week, my thanks to Bob, Christine & Holly for all their hard work.

This week the Management Committee met at the Club also via Zoom continuing the running of our club.

Paddleboarding continued this week despite the earlier spell of poor weather, it would be great to see more come down and join in, Monday 18:00 to 20:00.

Writing this Abbey & myself are in Cork Ireland preparing for the ITCA Topper World Championships where Abbey will be representing HSC, good luck to her.

I look forward to seeing you all at our regatta week, we will again have Snowflakes & NBYC running the line on Tuesday and Wednesday.

See you soon

Will – Commodore HSC

Vice-Commodore’s Clew

Just over week to go now before we will be into the Club Regatta and Horning Week. You will find posters up in the clubhouse with details of all the social events and for those which require booking for food there is a page underneath where you can add your name. Alternatively email me with your requirements. We must have all bookings for the fish and chips on Monday 31 July by next Monday 24 July so I can put the order in to the Chippy. Orders for the Tex-Mex night can be up to a week later, but preferably as soon as possible.

There are a number of other things requiring names, as I am sure will have been mentioned elsewhere in Jibsheet. Horning Week very much depends on your involvement at many levels so take some time to look at what we need and what is on offer. This is our biggest event so let us make it so.

Looking ahead to Regatta Week

The first event is Regatta Weekend – on Saturday 29th/Sunday 30th July. The intention is that a decision will be made this weekend as to whether this takes place on the Broad or River, and the decision will be communicated to members.

The full race programme for Regatta Week is available in the White Book.

Horning Week Sunday service – from Caroline Johnson

There will be a short informal service in the marquee led by Ian Johnson on Sunday 30th July at 09:30 before racing starts.  We will welcome members of Horning Church who like to come and join us in this sailing club tradition.  Everyone is very welcome.

There will be a retiring collection for the RNLI.

Mad Hatter’s tea party – from Julie Thomson

Make sure you are ready for Sunday (30th July) of Horning regatta weekend.

Make your hat now!

It can be any theme:  animal, cartoon, boat, flowers etc

Make it from scratch or embellish your sailing hat.

Prizes for both adult and junior entrants.

Judging to take place Sunday 30th after racing.

Don't forget delicious cakes will also be available.

Charity Day – Horning Week

Several of you will distinctly remember a dinosaur running the line during Horning Week two years ago (and no, I’m not being rude to the Commodore!) – but it was all in aid of charity, with a dress up day to raise funds. This year, we will be having Wednesday as our charity day to raise funds for the RNLI. Please come and sail/take part in fancy dress (as whatever character you wish!) and help us to raise funds for this very worthy cause!

Presidents’ Day during Regatta Week

Hopefully you have received your invitation to come and join us (Holly, Chris & Robert) for a special Reception on Thursday 4th August at 12pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and we would be delighted if you would accept the invitation to become a Vice President for the day and to enjoy the event. Not only is it a great opportunity to catch up with friends, but it keeps the tradition of the Horning Week spoons going, which are awarded to our sailors during the day. We would appreciate an RSVP by Thursday 27 July please and the Justgiving link (for your kind donations) is here.

Holly, Chris & Robert

Get your HSC Club clothing

With Horning Week approaching, it’s a great time to be thinking about supporting the Club through club clothing – check out what’s available here – everything from hoodies to beanies, t-shirts to rucksacks: https://st-cyr.co.uk/product-category/horning-sailing-club/

Helm & Crew Opportunities

Don’t forget that I am co-ordinating helms and crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water now, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to coordinate these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!

Could you contribute to Jibsheet?

We are looking for members both young and old to make occasional or regular contributions to Jibsheet – whether it be your sailing journey so far, achievements or experiences, thoughts on your sailing activities, suggestions for what you’d like to see – or simply information you’d like to share with others. Please contact Holly if you would like to know more - news@horning-sailing.club
