Hi everyone,

What a week it has been at HSC, with the big news being the success of our young sailors at the Broadland Youth Regatta last weekend. Racing at Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, the team were a fantastic credit to the Club, taking the winner’s trophy for the third time in HSC’s history – a great achievement which we are all very proud of! It was a challenging day to sail as extremely light winds in sweltering heat during the morning meant that racing was postponed (with a lot of swimming on the agenda, including from the adults!), and racing only getting underway after lunch. After the first race was abandoned, two more were swiftly completed, in which our young team excelled.

Congratulations to all the young sailors – and it looks like the celebrations were well enjoyed!

Meanwhile, back at HSC, it was another hot day for racing on the Broad on Sunday, which was well enjoyed by the competitors despite the shifty winds causing some challenges! You can read the report here.

This coming weekend there are several events taking place. Tomorrow (Saturday) is our Junior Regatta, a culmination of the year’s training activities, followed by Open Dinghy Weekend, with sailing tomorrow on the river, and Sunday on the Broad. The full programme is the in the White Book.

We would also like to wish good luck to Toby Fields and Daniel Blackwell, who will represent HSC tomorrow in the Ramuz Trophy, being raced for in Yeomans at Coldham Hall Sailing Club. This inter-club championship run by the NSBA sees sailors from clubs across the Broads compete!

We’ve also introduced a new ‘For Sale/Wanted’ section for members in Jibsheet for sailing related equipment – so if you have anything you’d like to include, please email news@horning-sailing.club

Commodore’s Update

Will – Commodore HSC

Saturday saw our juniors take part & win the Broadland Youth Regatta, held at NBYC Wroxham. As Commodore it was a very proud moment for me & the Club, a great end to my year. Our juniors were great ambassadors for the Club, with a great team sprit throughout the day. Hamish Harmer came Overall 1st in the Slow 2B’s with his Splash, with Abbey Penny Overall 3rd in the Topper fleet. It was a very hot day with no racing starting until the afternoon, due to little or no wind. Thanks to Andy & team for sorting everything for the team.

On Sunday Abbey & myself were at Ely Sailing Club, where Abbey represented HSC at the ITCA GBR Topper Traveller - Abbey came joint 3rd, well done to her.

On Monday I chaired my last Management Meeting as Commodore. On Thursday, Flag Officers and others will have another meeting to finalise arrangements for our Open Down River in October. More details to follow & volunteers will be needed.

This Saturday I look forward to the Junior Regatta.

Don’t forget our up and coming AGM (13th October) - please attend if you can as it will include details  about voting for the club to become a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation), your vote & attendance is important.

Vice Commodore’s Clew

We had your Entertainments Committee Meeting last weekend and I can now bring you details of the exciting events we have planned for you in the remainder of our normal season.

First we have the Oktoberfest-themed End of Season Supper in the Clubhouse on Saturday 14 October, halfway through the End of Season Regatta. This will start at 1900 and there will be bratwurst, schnitzels and vegan bratwurst accompanied by fried potatoes with onions and bacon (bratkartoffeln) and apple strudel or Black Forest gateau for dessert. There will be German bier available at the bar, as well as all the usual beers and wines. We have arranged to have appropriate recorded Oktoberfest music and you are encouraged to wear Bavarian style clothes if you have something suitable. The cost is only £8 each or £4 for a child under 10. We need your booking by 01 October to ensure we have time to order enough supplies. Book here

Then comes the Big Night on 28 October when we have the Prizegiving Dinner and trophy presentations. This year we will be at The Old Rectory in Crostwick and we have a very enticing 3 course menu for you with plenty of choices. You will find these on the booking form and we will need to let the hotel know our choices and numbers by 14 October. The price is £30 each and £15 for children under 10. This is our most prestigious social event of the year, showcasing our winners and trophies so we hope for a large turnout as befits the occasion.

Rear Commodore’s Update

Firstly, we would like to congratulate the Juniors who won the Broadland Youth Regatta last weekend. Our proudest moment was hearing a member of another club congratulating them for their behaviour both on and off the water. Well done guys.

The Club and ourselves need your help... on September 23rd (11am-2pm) we will be setting up a work party and would really appreciate your time and support in completing  tasks around the island and in the pens opposite. Lunch will be provided with a small buffet of sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

These are the tasks:-

  • Reed cutting and strimming
  • Unload a delivery of wood and carry it across to the Island (this is to replace and repair the slipways and pathways, an ongoing job)
  • Rubbing down the iron footbridge- ready for painting.

We know that your time is valuable so any time you could spare on the day would be really appreciated, and so that we have enough food please let us know if you can make it.

Galley News

Firstly, many congratulations to our HSC Juniors for bringing back the Broadland Youth Regatta Trophy! It was so lovely to share the day with you all and you really did the Club proud both on and off the water.

The galley anticipates another busy weekend as we hold our annual Junior Regatta and Open Dinghy weekend. We are hoping that the issues taking card payments may be resolved this week but if you are able to bring cash when purchasing anything from the galley, that would be gratefully appreciated, just in case!

Saturday and Sunday

The galley will be open both Saturday and Sunday. We have breakfast available to purchase from 8:30am.

We will also be making a selection of sandwiches and baguettes for people to choose from, from the fridge for lunch. Toasties will also be available with a variety of fillings.

But remember if there isn’t anything there you prefer, then no worries, if we’ve got it, we’ll make it!

See you Saturday and Sunday!
