Hi everyone,

As, this week, many of our thoughts are with events across the world, closer to home we have just a couple of weeks until the start of our 2022 season, with our Rigging Out Supper on Saturday 26th March and the start of sailing on Sunday 27th March (more on both of these below). First, some updates from our Flag Officers who have been working hard behind the scenes, along with various Committees, to get the Club ready for the season ahead. There is also a work party this Saturday (5th March) from 10am – please give a hand if you can.

Commodore’s Update

We are fast approaching our new season & look forward to seeing everyone. The venue has been booked for our Rigging Out Supper on Saturday 26th March at The Wroxham Hotel, 19:00 for 19:30 sit down. It will be a two course, Main & Dessert @ £26/head. The booking form can be found in the Downloads section of the Club website. Please book early as we have limited the numbers to keep everyone safe & comfortable. We must let the hotel know in advance for numbers & food requirements so no late booking can be accepted after the closing date. Payments can be made direct to the HSC Ents account. If I could ask members to bring prizes for the raffle, please.

The rest of the events for the season, including Horning week, are well underway.

We have seen some very wet & windy weather, so would advise members to check their boats as we have had to secure some boats & sails.

Our various committees have been working hard in preparation for our new season, with Peter & myself attending.

As members will probably be aware, the up river web cam was pointing at the decking, it was broken by a dinghy mast & is currently being repaired, so will be back to its normal position shortly.

Due to personal reasons, our Training Centre Principal Bob Hancock is stepping down & retiring.  We must say a huge thank you to Bob for the years he and the Hancock family have given to the club and have a training centre the envy of many clubs. If we have a member who has good organising skills who would be interested in taking on the role to work with our chief instructors, please can you contact me direct where details of the role can be discussed, you do not have to be an instructor for this.

Well that’s all for now, please keep safe & take care.

Will – commodore@horning-sailing.club

Rear Commodore’s Figure of 8 Knot

We have recently planted hedge plants along the fence round the car park at the Club. They are only 60 centimetres high at present so you will not notice them easily. Please do not do any cutting or trimming of vegetation around the car park perimeter for now as the plants become established. At the far end of the car park there is a short thick row of spare plants in the grass, which also need to be left alone in case we need them for gaps in the hedge which will eventually appear.

This weekend we have another work party, 1000 to 1300, and the aim will be to do some painting. Light lunch will be provided as usual

Training Update

Many thanks to all those who have been getting in touch regarding training – it is filling up fast, so please do contact trainingcentre@horning-sailing.club if you have not already done so to express your interest. More information will be sent nearer the start of training.

As Will said, we are looking for a member/members who would be interested in the running of the Training Centre. If you’d like to find out what is involved, please get in touch with Bob on 07570 090088 who would be happy to have an informal chat.

Horning Pantomime

It’s that time of year again (oh no it isn’t!). Horning Sailing Club have traditionally been great supporters of the Horning Pantomime, and we usually organise a group to go and watch it. In light of the ongoing Covid-19 situation, we have not organised a group this year, but your support of HATS (Horning Amateur Theatrical Society) would be very much welcomed by HATS. With several of HSC’s members either playing a role onstage or behind the scenes, we would love to see you there! The pantomime is “Mother Goose” and performance dates are 10th -13th March (next week) – Thurs & Fri 10th & 11th at 7.30pm, Saturday 12th 2.30pm & 7.30pm and Sunday 13th 2.30pm at Horning Village Hall. Tickets are £6 for adults and £4 for children, available from Tidings Newsagents in Horning, Abbotts Countrywide Estate Agents in Hoveton, or by calling Christine Charles on 01692 630751.

Horning Boat Show

Once again Horning Sailing Club will play a key role in the Horning Boat Show, which is taking place on Saturday 30th April. We will be running a Discover Sailing Day with plenty of opportunities for friends/family and the local community to get on the water. Please save the date - more information to follow soon.

Looking forward to the season ahead

There is plenty to look forward to this season – from just getting on the water, to socials, the Three Rivers Race and Horning Week – we’ll also be reintroducing our popular Paddleboarding on Monday evenings and Sundown series on Saturdays. If you have any ideas for what you’d like to see this season, please get in touch – commodore@horning-sailing.club

HSC 200 Club

We plan to hold the first quarterly draw of the season in the Clubhouse on Sunday 27 March. Fifteen numbers totalling £320 are drawn each quarter, with a top prize of £75. Like to join the HSC 200 Club? A fresh supply of 200 Club application forms will very shortly be on the notice board on the back wall of the Clubhouse. Alternatively you can speak to Will.
