Hi everyone, and welcome to this fortnight's edition of Jibsheet. Apologies that it is a little later than planned, but it does provide a timely opportunity to remind you about this Thursday's Rules Evening, taking place on Thursday 9th February - and the tour of Jeckells on 23rd February. More information is available on both these events below in Peter’s report.

We are also looking forward to the start of our new season, with sailing starting on Sunday 26 March (a little over 6 weeks away!) - in the meantime planning has been well underway for the 2023 season, with meetings of many committees, including Race Management and Training. HSC was also represented at the Horning Hub event on 28th January – this was an opportunity for organisations in Horning to talk to the local community about their offering – and we look forward to welcoming members of the community to the Club in the coming season. It was also great to see HSC supporting the Horning Pantomime (and very vocally too!)

Commodore’s Update

Welcome to this edition of Jibsheet, I have been busy attending our work party which saw more members coming along to help. I trained several members to use our new cutting machine, which makes light work of cutting down the vegetation across at the riverside moorings. My thanks to all who gave up their time with a great lunch afterwards cooked by Trudy. Peter & I will arrange further work parties where again we need your help, with the ever spiralling costs it’s even more important we all pitch in & help, so we can reduce our costs, this will help keep membership fees down.

On Saturday 28th January I attended the “What’s happening in Horning” organised by the Horning Hub, HSC attended with Bob Hancock & myself manning our stall, it was good to meet both new people interested in what we do & others who have been involved with the club over the years. It was great to showcase what the club does & how we like to be involved with our local community. It was also nice to speak to others clubs & activities that take place in the village or locally. My thanks to Holly, Anne & Bob for getting together info & pictures with also us showing our footage of our activities/events on our large monitor.

I have also been dealing with various club related items since the last edition of Jibsheet.

Last weekend I was away again with my daughter Abbey at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, where she was sailing as part of the ITCA (International Topper Class Association) team, joining the RYA South West RTG (Regional Training Group). I was out assisting the coaches on the water. We have several more events to attend where Abbey represents HSC.

Peter & I would love to see someone come forward to take up the Rear Commodore position, we work as a team, if you are interested please get in touch so we can sit & have a chat.

I hope, as our season is getting even closer that your boats have all had some TLC ready to launch for the new season.

Peter & I look forward to seeing you at the Rules evening on Thursday.

In the meantime keep safe & well

Regards

Will – Commodore HSC

Vice Commodore’s Clew

We had a well attended working party on 21 January. It was a glorious sunny winter day to be across the river clearing reeds back from the moorings. Several people were taught how to use the new cutting machine and we all came back to the club for a hot lunch kindly made for us by Trudy Sergeant. Thank you to all who attended, with special thanks to Trudy.

There are no further working parties planned so far and the dates in last year’s White Book can be ignored. The system from now on will be to identify specific tasks and then call for volunteers when we have the work planned out for you.

We have 2 winter training sessions coming up next. On Thursday 09 Feb Kim West will be presenting The Racing Rules of Sailing at 1900 in the clubhouse. This will be an opportunity for some interactive learning and discussion before the season starts and young and new members are particularly encouraged to attend this event. Apart from anything else it will be a welcome sailing orientated social occasion to brighten up a winter’s evening.

On Thursday 23 Feb we have a visit to Jeckells the Sailmakers at their sail loft in Hoveton. This event starts at 1830 and we would like to have an idea of numbers attending to help Jeckells with their arrangements, which will include some demonstrations of how modern sails are made. Please email me if you are planning to come, it should be a very interesting evening.
