It was a sweltering hot day for Horning Sailing Club’s racing on Hoveton Little Broad at the weekend. With many sailors still recovering from the Three Rivers Race, the gentle breeze was appreciated for a leisurely sail on the Broad. The race area being reduced due to the ongoing weed growth, the Officer of the Day set a course to make the most of the conditions – although several sailors were heard asking “which way next?!” whilst sailing! With the race programme seeing three back-to-back races, the first series was quickly under way. The Reedlings were away first, with Robert Hancock (Siskin) winning the first two races, the third going to Stuart Bailey (Jaws). Amongst the Yeomans, Toby Fields (Tanskey) won all three races, with Geoff Stubbs (Tara) second, and Steve Middleditch (Scorpio) third in each race, despite competition from the rest of the fleet. The Rebels saw Kim West/David Pritchard (Rebel) win two races as opposed to Amanda Barnes/Gary Wright’s one win (Rebel Jade).
The dinghies enjoyed cooling down between races with capsizes – the first Allcomers B race was won by Hamish Harmer in his Splash, with William Woolston second (Laser). The second saw a win for William with James Street (Laser) second, and the third won by James with William second. Jasmine Herring was first Topper in two races.
Next Saturday sees the start of the Club’s Saturday evening informal ‘Sundown’ race series, and Sunday sees club racing continue on the Broad.
