Hi everyone,

We hope that you’ve had a great week – what beautiful weather, and just in time for the bank holiday and half term – it’s been brilliant to see so many people enjoying being on the water. It’s been another hectic one at HSC, with a junior race night Thursday, a pre-3RR work party on Saturday, Club racing on the Broad Sunday and one of our SUP paddleboarding evenings Monday.

It was brilliant to get back on the Broad Sunday for the continuation of our three back-to-back race series – which saw a good turnout amongst most fleets. The weather was ideal, with the wind breezier than forecast. If you missed the action, you can catch up here: https://horning-sailing.club/news/club-racing-sunday-30th-may-2021/ - we also had good coverage in the EDP today.

As it’s also National Volunteering Week, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank YOU, the Club volunteers, for all your efforts – there has been a phenomenal amount of work go on this year to get the club back up and running, and not only return to existing activity, but start up new activities too – so thank you all.  It’s thanks to the efforts of members through work parties that we can keep costs low and not go externally for works to be completed, so your continued support with these is really appreciated.

This weekend sees the Club host the 60th Yachtmaster Insurance Three Rivers Race, with over 100 competitors expected to participate. Organising an event of this scale given the current environment is no mean feat, and our thanks go to the Three Rivers Race Committee for all their efforts and diligence in enabling the event to go ahead. A separate risk assessment has been carried out by the Three Rivers Race Committee and, in addition to the usual COVID guidelines and risk assessments applying to HSC (available via the HSC website), we wanted to highlight a few points for members to be aware of:

·       One-way bridges – from today, the pontoon bridge is across the dyke. Please access the island using the pontoon bridge and then return to the car park using the green footbridge (unless physically unable to do so).

·       Car Parking – from Saturday onwards Club parking is for Competitors and Race Officials only.

·       Spectators – As the Island will be very busy with Competitors, could we please request that Spectators please be mindful of numbers on the Island and only come onto the Island after the Start Sequence for the Race is underway, and that you maintain social distancing at all times. This means that all groups should be spaced out on the Island frontage – and we are limited to groups of 30 outdoors. Only customers of the Galley or visitors to Race Control may enter the Clubhouse during the Start Sequence. Don’t forget that we have the webcams which provide a great view of all the action! https://horning-sailing.club/webcams/

·       Competitors - If you are participating, we wish you fair winds and an excellent sail – but most of all enjoy yourselves! We’d love to hear your stories of the Race afterwards – please send them for inclusion in the next Jibsheet!

Junior Race Nights

We have continued our junior race nights and last Thursday was a beautiful evening with some 20+ young sailors on the water. The gentle breeze held up and the sun shone to provide very pleasant conditions. We’ve had a week’s break this week (for Three Rivers), before returning on Thursday 10th June. Due to unforeseen circumstances we had to cancel the planned Zoom Training Q&A but, as always, if you have any questions please get in touch and we will be happy to help – trainingcentre@horning-sailing.club

SUP (Paddleboarding) nights

Our Paddleboarding (SUP) nights have continued on Monday evenings, with 20+ paddleboarders and kayakers (and even a dog!) joining us last Monday for a paddle to Hoveton Little Broad – it was great fun, and these will be continuing weekly 5.30-7.30pm. The booking link is here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hsc-paddleboarding-sessions-tickets-154099047399

Crews wanted/available

Please continue to get in touch if you either need a crew or are available to crew – and I will coordinate these requests – commodore@horning-sailing.club

3RR Galley Rota

With just a couple of days to go, the Race Committee are still in need of Galley volunteers to help over the weekend – with the main slot needing filling being 4am-7am Sunday – if you can help, please contact Karen Fields  -  karen@thepiglets.plus.com

Thank you.

Yeoman Nationals – 19/20 June + Fleet BBQ 19 June (all welcome).

HSC will be hosting the Yeoman National Championships this year. It would be great to have as much of our fleet sailing as possible. Racing will be on our Broad course on Saturday afternoon (briefing 13:00) and then on Sunday, broadly following our Programme C. We have had 13 different Yeomans competing in the spring series so far, it would be fantastic to have an HSC turnout like that for the event, joining others from NBYC and possibly beyond. I am aware that for many it may be your first championship but we have the Broad to ourselves so once started it will feel no busier than a normal Sunday.

We are also hosting a fleet barbecue social outdoors on the Saturday evening from 6pm. All are welcome, you do not have to be a Yeoman helm or crew. Meat or vegetarian options, £5 per head.

Entry forms and the notice of race will follow shortly - please contact me if you need any further details: tfields9@hotmail.co.uk

Hope to see you there! Toby

HSC 200 Club Update

Don’t forget that there are still numbers available for HSC’s 200 Club – which helps to raise funds for the Club. For a leaflet please ask Will or Holly, or contact Joan Butcher for more information (details in White Book).
