Hi everyone,

It’s been a rather poignant week at HSC, with the passing of our President Alex Humphris on Sunday morning.  Alex introduced numerous members to sailing in his days at Norwich School and many members have been in touch with wonderful stories and memories.  This year we have lost several prominent club members who were such a fundamental part of club life; all of whom are greatly missed. We would like to celebrate their lives in the next edition of Mainsheet. So please share your memories and anecdotes by talking to Holly, Will and Anne, or email them to commodore@horning-sailing.club.

Despite the sad circumstances, it was rather fitting that racing was run on the Broad by members of the Rebel fleet, and we had Commodore’s Day in the afternoon. You can read more about Sunday here: https://horning-sailing.club/news/club-racing-commodores-day-2208/

Club racing Sunday - thanks to Katie Burr for the picture

Looking ahead to this weekend

On Saturday we have the last of our Sundown informal race series for this season. These have been great fun and enjoyed by a lot of members. On Saturday we’ll be kicking off around 4pm – so let’s make it a great turnout for the final week!

Monday evening will see our final paddleboarding session take place on the river, starting at 5.30pm. These have been more popular than we ever could have imagined when starting them back in May, and it’s been great to see so many people joining in and getting involved. If you want to give paddleboarding a try, this will be your last chance this season – if you don’t have your own board, please email commodore@horning-sailing.club in advance so we can organise enough boards!

Thursday (2nd September) will also see the final Training Night of 2021 before our end of training Junior Regatta – hope to see you there!

Don’t forget

Nominations for next year’s Committee are currently open.  You can sign up via the board in the Clubhouse or, if you cannot make it down to HSC, through contacting the Secretary (01692 630507 secretary@horning-sailing.club). All nominations need to be proposed and seconded by full voting members. If you’re keen to get involved in the running of the Club, have some ideas you’d like to share, or just have a lot of enthusiasm, please do think about standing – we’d love to encourage new people onto the Committee.  If you have any questions, please speak to Will or Holly.  Don’t delay, closing date 10th September.

HSC Junior Regatta

Following the conclusion of Thursday night training, we will have our Junior Regatta on Saturday 11th September. We would ask young sailors to please arrive at 8.30am to rig, after which we will have two races in the morning, then lunch – available to purchase from the galley or bring your own. This will be followed by further races in the afternoon – and the presentation of certificates and trophies and a BBQ (free for the young sailors). Please email trainingcentre@horning-sailing.club if your child would like to participate.

Bart’s Bash

Immediately after the Junior Regatta, we will hold our Bart’s Bash Race commencing at approx. 4pm. Everyone is welcome to take part in this Allcomers race, which is held annually in memory of Andrew “Bart” Simpson, who passionately believed that everyone should have the chance to try sailing and enjoy the many benefits that it brings. This event raises funds for the Andrew Simpson Foundation, and we would love to get a good turnout on the day. You also get to see your positions against sailors across the world! You can sign up to take part here: https://www.bartsbash.com/sign-up/individual

HSC on the Road

Over the summer, members have been sailing at various events across Norfolk, Suffolk and as far afield as Exe Sailing Club, Devon for the RS200 Nationals! Where’s the furthest you’ve been this year?  Let us know where, and how you got on the water! Although Regatta Weeks are drawing to a close, with Oulton Week this week, and Barton Regatta at the weekend, please keep us updated with how you’ve all been getting on – and your adventures.
