Hi everyone,

It’s been another busy week at Horning Sailing Club with a great weekend on the water. Sunday saw us return to Hoveton Little Broad, which opened for Easter week, for the first of our new shortened start sequences, which seemed to go relatively smoothly! Once back at the Clubhouse, members - both young and a little older - enjoyed an Easter Egg hunt kindly arranged by Dawn Docking. Monday was also our first Down River Race of the season, which had a great turnout, with several river cruisers, including a visitor, ten keelboats and a dinghy. You can read the full race report here: https://horning-sailing.club/news/hsc-easter-weekend-2022/

Commodore’s Report

We have had another glorious week of warm sunshine. Last weekend saw the first of our racing on the Broad with a good turnout, again plenty of sunshine & wind, it was nice to sit back & watch the racing from Bure Magic. Later, back at the Club, the juniors took part in an Easter egg hunt, with the rest of the day available for social sail & fun on the water.

The weather was good for the Down River to Thurne on Easter Monday, unfortunately I was not able to be there due to other commitments. I am sure many chocolate eggs were consumed over the holiday, I hope you all had a lovely Easter break catching up with friends & family.

The Horning Boat show is on the 30th April & it would be great to see members come & help promote our lovely Club, thanks also to the members who move their boats to facilitate this.

The 3 River Race is getting closer, so don’t forget to get your entries in.

We will, as my last report said, be carrying out the laying of the new surface for the dinghies in front of the racks shortly & will need a large team of members armed with wheel barrows & shovels to come & help, with food & drink being supplied.

I look forward to seeing many more taking part in this weekend’s sailing or just coming down & soaking up the atmosphere watching the sailing & having a chat with & cuppa & bacon roll from the galley.

In the meantime keep safe & well.

Regards

Will – Commodore HSC

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot

I have no new maintenance issues to report this week but will take this opportunity to remind you of the big work party event on the 07 May to lay a suitable area of firm standing for the (mainly) training boats on the island. As I anticipate the provision of a light lunch for all participants it would be helpful if you could let me know on the email address below whether you intend to come and help so we can plan for the numbers attending. Thank you.

First experiences of a Down river race

Dawn, Harrison, Katie and Tallulah took part in their first Down River race on Easter Monday, sailing with Kim West in Rebel Queen. Here, Dawn has written about their experiences:

Katie, Harrison, Tallulah and Dawn sailing Rebel Queen on the Down River race

We all had a great time and really enjoyed the trip. Harrison loved it and both he and Tallulah learnt so much from Kim, who, by the way, has the patience of a Saint! I never realised quite how much work went into sailing a bigger boat, and I never realised that sailing boats are targets for day boats and they do actually run into the side of the sailing boats!!! Brilliant experience and we’d all definitely go again!

It sounds like an eventful trip – but glad you all loved it!
