Hi everyone,

We had another weekend of two events over 14th/15th May, with our Single-Handed Open Saturday, then racing on the River Sunday. For both days we enjoyed good weather and sailing – you can read the full report here.

As our focus turns to preparations for the 61st Yachtmaster Three Rivers Race, we do need your help! - please see below.

We also have another busy weekend coming up. Saturday sees a work party take place from 10am to continue to work on the ground in front of the dinghy racks, and Sunday is a Downriver race to Thurne. If you intend to enter, please email racing@horning-sailing.club so that we can plan for numbers. We are also intending to hold Junior Racing on the river starting at 2pm Sunday (in addition to the existing programme).

Commodore’s Update

Welcome to this week’s report, Saturday saw the Single Handed Open at the club with 4 races over the day, again blessed with lovely sunshine with varying winds. The winner for the “C’s” was Abbey Penny & the “B’s was Chris Bolton, well done to them & all who took part, with a big thank you to all who ran the event and volunteered.

Again, Sunday was another good day’s sailing with members sitting in the sun watching the sailing & chatting with friends. We also saw a number of visitors coming over to see what the Club does, who appreciated the warm welcome that they received.

Due to personal circumstances our new Training Centre Principal has stepped down, thanks to Ange for the work she had done. The role has now been taken up by Andy Barnham, my thanks to Andy for stepping in. On Thursdays Andy & the training team will need your help & assistance, so please chat to them to see how you can help.

Our Three Rivers Race is only just over a week away & The Three Rivers Team urgently need your help - please see Toby’s request for Galley volunteers below; they also need help on one of our Guardships @ Hickling. It’s our Flagship event for the Club, so please step forward & help them make it a great event & fun to be part of.

Paddleboarding - I intend to start these sessions on Monday 6th June after the Bank Holiday, they will run from 6 till 8pm, with more information to follow soon. Help is required on the rescue boat, so put the date in your diaries - it will be great to see you all again, we had so much fun last year.

As you might have seen in the Clubhouse, we have set up 3 bins for Recycling, Cans, Glass Bottles & Paper/plastic bottles. Please use them as, currently, they are still being put in the general waste, which we would like to prevent. We are also going to have bins outside, so please use these so we can stop it going to landfill.

Please can whoever borrowed the two red buoyancy aids return them to the Club as they are required & belong to the training centre.

If you require club regalia please see the link on the Club website, any queries please contact Pauline Bourke. Pauline also has some stock @ reduced prices.

Can I please remind sailors not to push hire boats out into the middle of the river when racing as this has caused chaos.

Don’t forget we need your help please on Saturday with the new dinghy surface, many hands make light work - please bring a barrow & spade with you

That’s all for now.

Keep safe & happy sailing.

Regards

Will – Commodore HSC

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot

We will be working on our new hardstanding area again this weekend (Saturday 1000 to 1300) and welcome volunteers to help get this project completed. The hardest part is done but we still have lots of shingle to be laid. If there are enough of us we will also check on the general tidiness of the Club surrounds in preparation for the 3 Rivers Race the following weekend. You will notice that the river bank opposite the Clubhouse has already been mown.

On Sunday we have the next Downriver Open and we need to have your pre-entries via the racing@horning-sailing.club site in good time to allow planning of split starts. If you include boat name, sail number, handicap and names of helm and crew, plus an email address and phone number, we can do the briefing remotely on the day.

Request for help from the 3RR Committee

The Three Rivers Race is creeping up on us and we are looking for volunteers to prepare breakfasts and help keep the galley running over the race weekend. We are looking for people to cover one or more of the following slots:

Saturday 28th 8am – 1pm

Saturday 28th 10pm – 1am

Sunday 29th 1am – 4am

Sunday 29th 4am – 7am

Sunday 29th 7am – 10am

Sunday 29th 10am – end (usually early afternoon)

In addition, we are looking for a programme seller or two to help us sell our race programmes during the start sequence on Swan Green and around the island (some of our younger members have in the past proved highly effective salespeople in this role!).

If you can help, please contact Karen or Toby Fields by email on karen@thepiglets.plus.com or tfields9@hotmail.co.uk or give us a ring letting us know which shift(s) would be your preference.

The Three Rivers breakfast is a big part of why so many of our competitors do the race year after year, thank you in advance for your support in making this happen.

Toby Fields (3RR Committee)

Looking ahead to this weekend:

Sunday’s racing

Sunday sees a Downriver race, following Programme E. The OOD is Peter Coles. A briefing will be given on the day at 9.30am, but if you can please pre-enter in advance by emailing Bob on racing@horning-sailing.club and including a mobile number, we would be very grateful and can also send the briefing via text. The down river leg will also form part of the RCC Crystal Ball, so we are hoping to have a good turnout of River Cruisers participating.

Junior racing will be taking place starting at 2pm on the river at Horning. We are putting this on in recognition that, without this, it will be a couple of weeks before young sailors can get on the water, so we hope that they will make the most of this opportunity. It will be short sharp races for a couple of hours and the forecast looks good, so we hope that you can join us.

Crewing reminder

By way of a reminder, please email me on news@horning-sailing.club if you are in need of a crew/would like to crew and I’ll do my best to coordinate requests.

HSC 200 Club

Fifteen numbers totalling £320 are drawn each quarter with a top prize of £75. If you would like to join the 200 Club, the new HSC 200 Club application forms are now on the notice board on the back wall of the Clubhouse. Alternatively, you can speak to Will.

Easy Fundraising

If you haven’t signed up yet to support the Club through online shopping, you can do so at https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/horningsc/

The RYA East Regional Junior Championships - June 18th & 19th

The RYA Regional Junior Championships are taking place on 18/19 June at Grafham Water Sailing Club. Last year, Abbey & Anya took part and had a brilliant time. There are a range of different fleets, from the main racing fleets to Regatta and OnBoard (aimed at those with Stage 2).

It would be great to get a Horning contingent going – and it's a great opportunity for young sailors to experience sailing in a new venue and see what it's like at a large racing event, all whilst learning at a little more on the water and gaining some confidence.

For the OnBoard fleet, there will be boats to hire for free or you can take your own boat.

More information about the weekend can be found here: https://www.rya.org.uk/racing/british-youth-sailing/events/british-youth-sailing-regional-junior-championships
