Hi everyone,
We hope that you’ve had a good week. After the excitement of Horning Week (you can check out a video of the week here and pictures here), there’s been plenty still happening at HSC, from the Sundown series last Saturday to Club racing on Sunday, with both a Down River to Thurne and dinghy racing on the river (you can read about them both here: https://horning-sailing.club/news/club-racing-sunday-15th-august/), and paddleboarding on Monday. There’s lots more to look forward to as well, including Commodore’s Day this Sunday (22nd August) – more on this below. As we move towards the latter part of the season (and lose daylight), activities are starting to wind down – so there remains 2 more Saturdays as part of the Sundown series (finishing on Saturday 28th August), 2 more paddleboarding evenings (finishing Monday 30th August) and 2 more training nights (finishing Thursday 2nd September).
Looking ahead to this weekend
This weekend will see a Work Party on Saturday morning (21st August) from 10am – please do come down and give a hand if you can. As always, there are plenty of tasks to be undertaken. Saturday afternoon sees the Sundown Series informal racing continue from 4pm.
On Sunday, we are racing on the Broad – as previously, there will be 3 back-to-back races, and we will aim to be back at the Clubhouse for 1.30/2.00pm.

Series 2 – 30-45 min race

Series 3 – 30-45 min race

A note to the parents of Junior Sailors who have been taking part in Sunday Racing – we may possibly be able to take one or two parents up to the Broad; could other parents please stay on the Island and/or complete a loco parentis form – available here and send to me before Sunday (commodore@horning-sailing.club), we should be back by 1.30-2pm.
On returning from racing, we will have Commodore’s Day – and everyone is very welcome to come down and enjoy the afternoon. A FREE BBQ will be provided – and Pimms on arrival – I’d be grateful if you could please email commodore@horning-sailing.club if you intend to come, along with whether you require a vegetarian option, so that we can plan for numbers. There will be water-based activities for those who wish to get involved, or just come and have a chat with friends. We will also be having a model boat race – so get planning your boats (or build them on the day) – the rules are very simple: with the hull made of paper, cardboard or plastic only, and hull length not exceeding 18 inches. The sails can be made of any material – but propulsion must be wind-powered only. See you there!
Reflections on the season
We’ve also been getting quite reflective towards the end of the season – and it has been just brilliant to see people back on the water having a good time. In addition to the numerous new members we have welcomed this year, it has been particularly encouraging to see several past members returning to the club after a period away – and it’s great to see you all! Just this week, we were heartened to hear of a more mature member wanting to re-join after several years – and despite limited mobility is extremely keen to do duties and get fully involved in club life again!
Talking of Club life, nominations for next year’s Committee will be opening on Friday (20th August). This year, the nomination papers will be only available in the Clubhouse. If you’re keen to get involved in the running of the Club, have some ideas you’d like to share, or just have a lot of enthusiasm, please do think about standing for Committee – we’d love to encourage new people onto Committee - and if you have any questions, please do speak to Will or Holly.
