Hi everyone!

Just one week left to the start of the 2023 season! We are very much looking forward to welcoming you to the Club – whether you are returning or joining for the first time, with plenty to look forward to during the season. Our season kicks off on Saturday, with a work party in the morning to get the Island looking smart and ready for the season, our Rigging Out Supper at the Village Hall on Saturday evening (you can still book until tomorrow – please see Peter’s report below, and the attached booking form) – and racing starts on Sunday, on the River. Even if your boat isn’t ready yet, please still come down and say hello (and maybe have a catch up with friends over a tea/coffee!) – we would love to see you.

Commodore’s Update

Welcome to this edition of Jibsheet, it’s only a week before our new seasons starts, and I look forward to seeing you all. Don't forget the Rigging Out Supper being held at Horning village hall next Saturday evening, see Peter’s report for full details. Please bring a prize for the raffle.

On the 4th & 5th of March I was at the ITCA NS2 at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, where my daughter Abbey was taking part & representing HSC, Abbey did well & like all the sailors had to cope with the very cold conditions & being out on the water all day. I was out on the Coms rib over the weekend.

While we were there Russ from Topper brought the all new Topper dinghy for us to see, where for the past few years you could have any colour as long as it was red, now the new Topper is grey, with various changes in its build, but remaining true to its original design.

The last ITCA team training last weekend at Carsington we were due to attend had to be postponed due to the snow & conditions, we ended up Sunday at Westcliff-on-Sea Rugby club where Abbey plays for the Eastern Counties Team.

Please check with Geoff & David our berthing masters if you have any queries about moorings & place on the Island.

Next Saturday the 25th we will have a working party to get ready for our first racing of the season on Sunday 26th, so please come down & help, we will have a light lunch & drinks provided. It will be great to see as many boats out & members weather sailing or coming down to watch.

On Monday, the Management Committee meet again.

Our club relies on volunteers, without your help our costs would increase dramatically, so let’s all do our bit so we can keep fees down, it’s good fun too.

Don’t forget to sign up for the 3 Rivers Race - entries are open.

If you need crews, follow the links Holly has set up. I hope you all have a great season, if you wish to discuss anything please contact me, in the meantime have a great weekend & see you soon.

Regards

Will – Commodore HSC

Vice Commodore’s Clew

It is now only just over a week to the start of the new season, as I am sure will already have been noted in this edition of Jibsheet. That means we have the Rigging Out Supper next weekend to start things off and the poster regarding this is repeated in this Jibsheet. There is still plenty of room available but we do have to let our caterer know how many and what menu choices by the beginning of next week, so if you have not yet booked please do so now as our deadline has to be Sunday 19 March. Do not forget to bring a raffle prize and your own drinks as we do not have a bar at Horning Village Hall.

Will has probably also mentioned next weekend’s working party to get everything at the Club ready for the first day’s sailing on the Sunday. There is usually a good turn out for this working party as there is an obvious air of excitement at the start of the season, so come along and join in with the action, 10:00 to whatever is needed.

On Friday evening Will and I represented HSC at the annual Norfolk and Suffolk Boating Association Flag Officers’ meeting in Norwich. The NSBA produce the Green Book, with which most of you will be familiar. The event is a networking opportunity for all our local sailing clubs.

Finally, I think I will be echoing Will’s plea here for a volunteer to come forward to fill our vacant Rear Commodore post. It is not an onerous role and it carries the prestige of being a major player in representing and helping to manage your Club. The Flag Officers and other Committee members are all supportive of each other, so you need never feel alone or short of advice. We look forward to welcoming a new colleague to help carry the Club forward.

Update from the Yeoman Fleet

Horning Yeoman Fleet Update & Social

Join members of the Horning Yeoman Fleet for a social afternoon of sailing and informal tuning on Sat 1st April. Have a look at others’ boats and get out on the water for an afternoon of cruising on the river. Not a Yeoman sailor but interested in coming down? All are welcome, we are always looking for potential new crews in the fleet!

We will start at around 2pm. The Yeoman hoist may be in use on this day so please park well clear of it around the edge or towards the far end of the car park.

Teas, coffees etc. will be available from the galley.

If there is demand, we may book a table at one of the Horning pubs for an evening meal on the 1st, please let Toby know if you would like to join us.

Don’t forget, racing at HSC starts on Sunday 26th March on the River course, the early season is the ideal time to improve your confidence racing on the River, before the motor cruisers increase in number. Our first start is at 10:40.

Hoist Syndicate Update

Membership of the hoist syndicate is currently £85 per year for as many lifts as you require. Please contact Toby Fields on tfields9@hotmail.co.uk for further information. Our project to bring powered winching to the hoist is going through design stages at present, more details to follow.

We anticipate Saturday 25th March (Rigging Out Supper day) as being a particularly busy one for the hoist. If you are planning to launch on that day, please let Toby know we may need to have rough time slots for the hoist if there are several boats wanting to launch.

On the other hand, it is a good chance for a chat and many hands can make light(er) work on the winching handle!

Club clothing for the new season
