Hi everyone,

2022 season starting

It’s finally here, the start of season, and with this week’s beautiful sunshine we cannot wait to get back on the water. We are looking forward to seeing you all again and hope that you will be able to join us over the weekend, either on the water or just to say hello. Club Whitebooks (the Club handbook) will also be available for members to collect. We will be racing on the River this weekend, so you can see activity from the Clubhouse or on the Club’s webcams https://horning-sailing.club/webcams/ The Flag Officers and Committee have been working hard to get everything ready for this season and the working parties have been improving our facilities and site. We will be continuing to get the site ready this Saturday from 10am (see more below from Peter) so please come and give a hand if you can.

Commodore’s Update

A very warm welcome to all our members, our season is now here, it will be great to catch up with everyone. Come down & join us on Sunday - even if not sailing, enjoy a nice cuppa & a bacon roll or other delights from our galley, sit back & relax, enjoy watching the start of our sailing.

As always throughout our season we rely on our members to cover duties, as with many clubs this is more than just one duty, as without our volunteers sailing cannot happen.

Please can I remind members to keep the area around the crane, including into the car park, clear as several boats will be launching.

Orders for our Rigging Out Supper are now closed and no more can be added. Peter & myself look forward to seeing those attending on Saturday evening at The Wroxham Hotel, if attending please bring along a prize for the raffle. Apologies for the technical problems I encountered, I think I aged a few years with these, making sure all who wished to come had been accounted for.

Again, thanks to members who have supported Peter & myself with the work parties over the winter, it is greatly appreciated and needed in order to stem the rapidly rising costs. We will have more throughout the season, please come and join us, it a good social event also.

I would like to ask personally all our instructors for the training centre to come and help, even if you cannot make each week, this will be greatly appreciated. I am currently trying to find a new Principal for the Training Centre due to Bob retiring and stepping down. Anyone interested, as I have said, please contact me either via email or on my mobile 07860 587776. The Training Centre is a very important part of the Club, we have more and more local organisations wishing to be involved with the club, and to facilitate this, your help is needed please.

Peter, myself & all our committees have been working hard behind the scenes to run a normal season for you all, so keep an eye out for various events, we will keep you updated. Vikki & her galley team are going to increase what they offer, again watch for these.

For all who are suffering with Covid at the moment, I hope you have a speedy recovery. With this in mind can I please ask, in order to keep everyone safe & to feel able to come down & join in, that if you have symptoms or test positive that you refrain from attending the club.

If you have any queries or wish to discuss anything my door is always open to everyone.

This just leaves me to say Welcome to our new season and hope you all have a great year.

See you soon

Will – Commodore HSC

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot

Thank you to all those who came to help with our working party last weekend. Together we achieved a lot including repainting the quay edges and making an impressive start to preparing the ground for the hardstanding in the dinghy area by the storage racks.

Although we do not have an ‘official’ working party this coming Saturday, it is the start of our season and there are tasks to be done in preparation for the first sailing day on Sunday. If you have the time and interest please do come along and help get the new season off to a good start. I have been getting my own boat ready this week but will be taking some time out from 1000 on Saturday at the Club.

Race Management Updates – Spring 2022

Broad – 6’s and 3’s (new start sequence)

Starting on Easter Sunday, the Broad start sequence will be a warning signal at 6 minutes and then a preparatory signal at 3 minutes. This will shorten the starting sequence and reduce the amount of wasted time in the Broad programme. We will still be aiming to complete the three back-to-back races by 13:30 or earlier (please note that Dinghy Weekend is an exception to this – and see the programme in the White Book). The River and Downriver programmes will retain 10 and 5 minute start sequences.

River Course – please enter in the Clubhouse on the noticeboard

Handicaps

The full-rig Laser and Enterprise handicaps have been eased by 1% in line with national easing of their Portsmouth Yardstick numbers.

Protest Flags

SI 15 has been amended, boats designed as single handers no longer need to fly a red flag in order to protest, a hail will be sufficient.

Our full sailing instructions are available on our website, and there will also be a paper copy on the noticeboard in the Clubhouse.

A note from Anne Wagstaff, Hon Sec on the Duty Rota

Last year, because of the rapidly changing Covid-19 situation, I decided to allocate duty days on a monthly basis rather than publish a rota for the whole year in March. After all, apart from holidays, weddings etc., people’s diaries are not fixed in January. This seemed to work well with fewer last minute amendments or ‘no shows’.

Therefore, I plan to do the same this year, so don’t expect to receive a rota with your White Book.  When I allocate a duty day I will phone or email you to confirm suitability.  However, if you would like to book a date now, that’s absolutely fine too, just email/phone me.  This is the list of OODs’ dates, if you would like to be with one particular person, let me know.  You will see that the downriver on 21st August is lacking an OOD, please volunteer if you’d like to.

Given the demographic of our membership, it is getting ever harder to fill the rota with a ‘one duty per season’ policy.  Most clubs these days require members to do 2 or 3 duties at least.  This is something we will have to address at our AGM this year, but in the meantime don’t be surprised if I ask you to do an extra duty or two, you won’t be the only one being asked.

The Management Committee do so appreciate your co-operation with this, we can’t run our racing programme without as many members as possible doing their bit, without YOU the club would come to a grinding halt!  The clue is in the title, we are a self-help club.

I hope you all have a wonderful season’s sailing and socialising.
