Hi everyone,

While it’s been another busy week at HSC with all our usual activities (you can read last week’s race report here), preparations are in full swing for Horning Week and there has been a lot of hard work going on behind the scenes to get everything in place – a massive thank you to everyone who has helped. As Regatta Weekend is just a couple of days away, we are almost ready for festivities to begin – but have a few updates for you:

1.    Regatta Weekend – as this has been moved to the river (further to the update from Race Management earlier this week), this has required an amended schedule – please see below.

2.    Horning Week race pre-entries – the pre-entries for racing close today (28th July) – please complete and return the form on our website to Toby. Entries will still be possible on the day.

3.    Socials – please get your socials bookings to me (Holly) on news@horning-sailing.club as soon as possible. The forms are available on the website and we hope that you will make the most of the exciting and varied programme on offer.

4.    Duty rota – please can we encourage each of our members to sign up for a duty (or two) during Horning Week – we are ALL volunteers and YOUR help is needed to ensure that the week runs. We are particularly in need of volunteers for Regatta Weekend this weekend. Without sufficient volunteers, racing may not be able to take place. You can sign up direct to the rota here or email news@horning-sailing.club – thank you.

For those newer to the Club and not familiar with Regatta Week, we have created a Guide to Regatta Week, which you can read here. Hopefully this might answer some of your queries and give you a flavour of what to expect. If you are keen to do some crewing there are still a few opportunities to do so – please contact news@horning-sailing.club

Please also note that, due to Regatta Week, there will be no Sundown Series on 30th July or 6th August, no paddleboarding on 1st August, no training on 4th August, nor Club racing on 7th August.

Commodore’s Update

As we near our Regatta Week this weekend, another busy week getting everything ready.

Last Thursday I was cutting the grass on the dinghy park & clearing rubbish drop around the Island. Can I please ask that you place any cans, plastic bottle & sweet wrappers in the bin, let's keep our club tidy, it creates unnecessary work for others & spoils the look of the Club.

On Saturday, I thank the small team who turned up to help get the Club ready, it also saw the inaugural use of the Club's new cutting machine. It made short work of clearing the area over near the pens, pictures of it below.

Following the work party, we ran the Sundown Series with good wind, sun & fun had by all. Don’t forget to come & join us between 16:00 to around 18:00, a good chance to try out racing or just come & watch & soak up the atmosphere.

Sunday was very windy with a few capsizes amongst the dinghies but they stuck at it. Some issues with the keelboats with some breakages.

Monday again saw a good turnout for paddleboarding with an evening of fun outside the Clubhouse, while Peter, myself & some helpers put together our new plastic benches, they look great & are now in use at the front of the Club, with the ones still serviceable placed around the Club to give additional seating. See pictures below of them in use. They have a 25 year guarantee & are fully recyclable. Please don’t try to move them, they are very heavy.

On Tuesday evening, I attended as Commodore the Wroxham Week Club Dinner by invitation of Bob Payne NBYC’s Commodore, a lovely evening with excellent food cooked by their Galley team, my thanks to them.

On Wednesday, myself and Peter, along with a small group of volunteers, erected our new marquee I purchased last season for the Club. It gives us plenty of undercover space shading us from the sun or poor weather, let’s hope we keep the sunshine all week during our Regatta. After this I cut up the old benches that had been deemed no longer useable, they are now firewood.

On Thursday, Peter & myself were all day @ NBYC helping to run the line.

As you will have been made aware, due to the extensive weed still on the Broad, the weekend racing has been moved to the river. Although I know some will be disappointed, the decision was on the grounds of safety for all competing, also so everyone could enjoy the sailing, changes in the programme being sent out.

Please ensure if you leave the Club & your junior is still at the Club that a loco parentis form is completed & handed in, the parent / guardian must ensure the person acting as loco parentis is at the Club. Any visitors must be signed in please.

I look forward to seeing you all during the week, please remember to book food & trips well in advance as we need to advise on numbers. We have put a full programme of events on for you so please come along & enjoy them, details at the Club & on the website & social media.

A reminder that Commodores Day is to be rescheduled as I will be at Weymouth with Abbey who is representing HSC at the Topper Nationals all week, I will also be on duty. I will also be attending my son William’s passing out parade at Sandhurst as he becomes an Army Officer.

Have a great week, whether sailing or watching.

Regards

Will – Commodore HSC.

Rear Commodore’s 8 Knot

Thank you to everyone who has helped prepare the Club over the past week for the main event, Horning Week. I think we are just about ready so I hope you all have a great time. Will and I have been helping at Wroxham Regatta today, and the Flag Officers of NBYC will be doing the same for us on Wednesday next week. It is good to have this spirit of cooperation between our local clubs.

The weather for next week is looking good, and it will be our first unrestricted Regatta Week for 3 years. See you all there.
