Hi everyone,

We hope that you’ve had a good couple of weeks since our last update.

Although HSC’s season may be currently closed, there’s still plenty going on behind the scenes to get ready for next year and, as last season, we hope to have a sailing season as near-normal as possible. Plans are in full swing for all activities to go ahead as usual.

We shortly intend to share the 2022 provisional sailing programme following the meeting of the Norfolk & Suffolk Boating Association, which co-ordinates fixtures at all local clubs to try and ensure there are no clashes of major events. Will & Peter joined the RYA’s Affiliated Clubs Conference online, which emphasised the importance of planning ahead, and having an ‘Ambitions’ plan – something the Committee will be working on over the coming months.

Update from the Commodore – Will Penny

A warm welcome to all our members in this edition of Jibsheet, the nights are now drawing in & getting colder, let’s all keep an eye out for any less able friends & neighbours, so we all keep safe & well.

Since our last edition I have attended the Past Commodores evening, where I was a Past & Present Commodore, after the meal I thanked Holly for all her hard work during her Commodore year & her time as a Flag officer & presented Holly with gifts & card. My thanks to Karen Fields for organising the evening & the Old Rectory for a lovely meal & service.

I attended the RYA online conference on the 8th November, after they sorted out their technical difficulties. I will also be attending the in-person conference at the Royal Hospital School in Holbrook Suffolk, this is a great opportunity to meet other clubs & share ideas, discuss problems & solutions.

Attending also the Training Centre meeting, thanks to Bob & the team for all their ongoing work to ensure its continued success & that we meet all the required standards, also offer training in all areas requested.

A lot of work is ongoing to bring cost effective proposals for redeveloping the Club, when we have more news we will let you know, any fund raising ideas please email me.

With also carrying out the Vice Commodore role, the Entertainment Committee met on the 11th November to get plans underway for our Christmas Party, we also met last night, the 18th, to finalise plans - the poster with details of booking are attached & on our media channels, please respond early as my team need numbers & child details to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Please take care & we look forward to seeing you at the Christmas party, to which all members & family are welcome.

Will – commodore@horning-sailing.club (if you have tried to contact me in the last few weeks there have been a few technical difficulties with the email address that are now being resolved, so please feel free to resend any correspondence).

Figure of eight – update from the Rear Commodore – Peter Coles

We are continuing to run our working parties every 2 weeks to try and keep on top of our maintenance at the Club. Weather has not been very helpful recently but we have managed to make the staging across the river safer by completing laying a wire mesh anti slip covering. We have also almost completed some work in the pens to level up some of the staging there. You may also notice there are less weeds in the pathways on the island, but that is ongoing work as they seem to be still growing with the relatively warm weather.

We would very much like to see a few more of you on the Saturday morning work parties as there are always tasks to do. Most do not require any special skills, just a hardy all weather enthusiasm.

We are now providing a bit of lunch again at the end of the session, so look out for notice of future work parties, usually alternate Saturdays 1000 to 1300.

Peter – rear-commodore@horning-sailing.club

HSC Christmas Party

Plans are also well underway for HSC’s Christmas Party, which is planned to take place on Saturday 4th December from 5pm. All members are very welcome. We would ask that all parents of under-16s planning to come RSVP by Wednesday 24th November to commodore@horning-sailing.club.

Food will be provided by our brilliant galley crew and the bar will be open.  Please bring a raffle prize. Christmas jumpers are also encouraged!

Help HSC Raise Funds through EasyFundraising

As we progress the plans for our Clubhouse project, Horning Sailing Club has now registered with ‘easyfundraising’, which means you can raise FREE donations for us every time you shop online. Over 6,000 shops and sites will donate to us when you use easyfundraising to shop with them – at no extra cost to yourself!

These donations really mount up and make a BIG difference to us, so we’d really appreciate it if you could take a moment to sign up and support us. It’s completely FREE and only takes a moment.

You can find our easyfundraising page at https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/horningsc/

It’s really simple to use and all you need to do is register your support for our cause before continuing to shop online as usual. If you’d like more help with getting started please contact news@horning-sailing.club

Thank you so much!

Future work parties

The next work party is this Saturday, 27th November, 10am-1pm. The more members that come along and help, the more this enables us to keep costs down. The full dates of work parties over the winter can be found in the White Book. Please come and give a hand if you can.

Members are of course also always welcome to help with the Thursday morning work parties. Please contact Geoff Stubbs or Rodney Storey for more information, or pop down to see them on a Thursday between 10am-1pm.

Activities over the winter

We are hoping to have some activities over the winter to keep members in touch, particularly younger ones – so please watch this space for more information!

Have you moved your boat yet?

If you are not intending to sail with Snowflake Sailing Club and have not been in touch with us regarding leaving your boat on the Island over the winter, please could you arrange for its removal as soon as possible. Many thanks.

Keep in touch

I’d be really keen to hear your stories and adventures over the winter to include in Jibsheet, so please keep me updated with your news.  Please email  them to Holly on news@horning-sailing.club.
