Hi everyone,
Time has flown since our last update and, in that time, we have had our Prizegiving and Officers’ Handover, and also our final work party prior to handover to SFSC before Snowflake’s 2021-2 season got underway. We’ve held the first meeting of the new Management Committee, and the Race Management Committee has met to plan the programme for 2022. We hope to share dates and a provisional sailing programme with you very soon. We'd also like to remind members that if you are not intending to sail with SFSC over the winter, can you please arrange for your boat to be moved off the Island, or if you wish to leave your boat on the Island, please get in contact with SFSC.
Welcome to our new (and familiar) Flag Officers and Committee
A very warm welcome to our Commodore Will Penny and also to our new Rear Commodore Peter Coles, to both of whom we wish all the best for the coming years. Here is a short introduction from them both:
Will Penny (commodore@horning-sailing.club) – Commodore
A warm welcome to all our members new & existing, many members have known me for several years, I was a Flag Officer previously from 2014 and your Commodore back in 2016. I have served on the Management Committee shortly after joining the Club back in 2008, becoming part of the Training Centre as an Instructor. I have sailed over the years with Dick Angier in both our Yeomans, taking part in the 3 Rivers race, also manning a guardship on several occasions.
Last year I became a Flag Officer again, taking on Vice & Rear Commodore roles, it is with great pleasure to again be your Commodore including Vice Commodore. Last year was a great challenge with Covid-19 which saw both Holly & I working extremely long hours to ensure we could have as near normal season as possible while complying with the all the rules & restrictions. A massive thank you to Holly for all her hard work. It was also so nice to receive many lovely messages from members. I look forward to working with Peter, our new Rear Commodore, to continue to improve our Club & facilities. Peter & I along with our new Committee hope to have a normal season, Covid-19 permitting.
On a more personal note, I have two children, William & Abbey, both of whom I am immensely proud of. William went through the Training Centre, going on to be part of the Topper National Squads representing HSC. In 6th Form & University sailing in various boats & places, including Australia. After graduating from University, William is now at Sandhurst undergoing his Army officer training (an immensely proud dad).
Abbey who has just celebrated her 14th Birthday, has also gone through the Training Centre, through to the race group, also taking part in the racing programme. Abbey took part in her first national sailing event, the Junior National Championship at Grafham Water, where she came 15th overall & 6th girl making dad very proud also representing HSC.
I would like to extend my thanks to Belinda & her team at The Boathouse, who provided us with an excellent venue, food & service for our Prizegiving & Officer Handover. My thanks to all who have supported me over the past season & offered their help for the coming season.
As said, I am proud to become your Commodore again, I’m sure there will be a few challenges ahead. HSC is a family friendly club, its members can be proud of, let’s all work together to make it even better.
Please feel free to speak or message me on any matter.
Take great care of yourselves.
See you soon.
Will
Peter Coles (rear-commodore@horning-sailing.club) – Rear Commodore
Hello from Peter Coles, Rear Commodore.
I have been a club member since 2015 with my wife Ann and we sail and maintain Rebel Chieftain R11. We moved to Norfolk from Derbyshire 4 years ago to be much closer to our sailing areas, and we now live in Horstead. My previous associations with HSC have been in several 3 Rivers Races over the years, and even further back in the RAF Coltishall boats. I have sailed on the Broads intermittently for over 50 years, and also sail at sea, with my sea boat based at Woodbridge.
I am looking forward to my year as your new Rear Commodore and will be working closely with Will and others to keep the fabric of the Club in good shape. There are always many tasks to be done so I look forward to meeting many of you on our Saturday working parties.

The more members that come along and help, the more this enables us to keep costs down. The full dates of work parties over the winter can be found in the White Book. Please come and give a hand if you can.
Members are also always welcome to help with the Thursday morning work parties. Please contact Geoff Stubbs or Rodney Storey for more information, or pop down to see them on a Thursday between 10am-1pm.
HSC Prizegiving
We enjoyed a lovely evening for our End of Season Supper, Prizegiving and Officers’ Handover on Friday 22nd October at The Boathouse in Ormesby. Belinda and her team provided an excellent evening, which was greatly enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Adrian & Kerry Tooke, the Fields Family and Kevin & Marianne Saunders for all their help with the trophies. Congratulations to all the award winners!
