Hi everyone,
Happy New Year and welcome to the first Jibsheet of 2021. We hope that you had a restful and relaxing Christmas break, and are keeping well in these difficult times.
HSC receives Martin Broom Memorial Trophy
It’s so nice to be able to start with good news and hopefully you’ve all seen that, earlier this week, Horning Sailing Club was awarded the Martin Broom Memorial Trophy for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Broads Boating’, particularly in relation to the Club’s work with the Three Rivers Race, Training Centre and the positive impact on both youth and adult sailors in the area. None of these activities could happen without the efforts of Club volunteers – so a huge thank you to you, the members, for all your efforts. We look forward to celebrating together when we are able to later in the year, and when a physical presentation of the Award can take place.
If you’d like to get more involved in volunteering at the Club, there are numerous ways in which you can help out and we’d love to hear from you – please contact commodore@horning-sailing.club
Club Update
Since our last update, we find ourselves in another national lockdown, and as we all do our part to stay at home to save lives, a reminder that the Club premises (including the Island, car park and moorings across the river) should not be visited or accessed at this time. We realise how frustrating this is, but this request is made following RYA and Government guidance – we will let you know once access is possible once more, and we appreciate your patience. It has also rather put paid to our plans to get on top of maintenance with regular work parties at the moment, but this will be a priority once these can take place.
We are also incredibly grateful to those who have already renewed membership for 2021. We know this is a really hard time to be asking for membership fees, particularly when the world seems so uncertain at the moment, but if you can renew, it is truly appreciated. We are still planning for the season to be as normal as possible (within the confines of what it is possible to do).
Socials Update
Our next social is an Archive Film Night on Saturday 23rd January, when we will watch sailing footage from the HSC archives from the comfort of your own homes, via Zoom. These were well received in the past and are returning due to popular demand! You will be able to access Zoom from 7.15pm for a 7.30 pm start – members have been emailed login details. Please do join us for a catch up and chat – it would be great to see you.
We’re also planning ahead for socials later in the year – and whilst it looks unlikely that an in-person Rigging Out Supper will be able to take place, we would like you to save the date as there will be a fun, online alternative – this will be on the evening of Saturday 27th March 2021. More information to follow soon.
Flag Officer Drop-In Session
The next Flag Officer Drop-In Session will be on Tuesday 16th February at 8pm. Login details will be sent nearer the time. If you’d like to discuss anything privately, please let us know so that we can ensure this happens.
Winter talks
We’re intending to hold a short series of winter talks via Zoom, including (hopefully) individuals from external organisations, e.g. the Green Blue. We can expand this out to other areas too, so if there’s anyone you’d like to suggest, or anything you’d particularly like to see – or perhaps you’d like to give a talk yourself (virtually) to members on something you’re passionate about (not necessarily just sailing) – please let me know – commodore@horning-sailing.club
Keep in touch!
Don’t forget that the Club is on social media – with a Facebook page, Twitter page (@HorningSC) and - new for 2021 – an Instagram page (@HorningSC). We also have a Facebook Group for the Training Centre – which all members are welcome to join.
Very best wishes to you all for a happy and healthy start to the New Year – we hope that you keep safe and well, and we are looking forward to seeing you soon.
