Sailing at the Heart of the Norfolk Broads

Senior Instructor: Keelboat

I started sailing when I was at school at the NSSA Filby in Wayfarers in 1969. After I finished school I didn’t do much sailing apart from the few occasions in my brother-in-law’s boat (a Pegasus). Around 2007 a friend of mine decided to buy a Wayfarer which we sailed around Hickling Broad and then in 2010 Dick (a member of HSC) asked whether I would like to crew him in his yeoman for the Three Rivers Races which we successfully completed. This then led us to selling the Wayfarer and buying ourselves a Yeoman and joining Horning Sailing Club so we could race competitively which we have been doing ever since. In 2014 I was made redundant from my job and I decided I wanted to give back and volunteer so with my free time I came down to the club on a Thursday evening to help out. In the season of 2013 I manned a safety boat with Kevin looking after the Enterprise fleet. Fairly early on in the season I was asked whether I would like to do a Keelboat Instructor course which I completed in October 2015. I am now a keelboat instructor on a Thursday evening and also instructing at Nancy Oldfield Trust to help disadvantaged people sail. In this time I have got my Keelboat instructor qualification, powerboat, safety boat, first aid at HSC along with my Helmsman course at Nancy Oldfield.
