Hi everyone,

Our 2023 season is now in full swing and this week we have not one, but two activities starting – with the Sundown series starting on Saturday evening (from 4pm) and Paddleboarding restarting on Monday evening – more on both of these below, but we hope to see you there. Don’t forget that we continue club racing on the Broad Sunday too.

Last weekend we enjoyed racing on the Broad in the warm sunshine – you can read the full report here.

Commodore’s Update

I hope you are all enjoying the lovely spell of good weather we are having at the moment.

We held a face to face/ hybrid Management meeting on Monday at the club with some Committee members joining by Zoom.

This weekend will see the return of the Sundown series on Saturday with racing starting at 16:00, also next Monday sees the start of Paddleboarding, both of these will require volunteers to come along & help with safety also to run them. Anyone who would like to learn the officer / time keeping please come along.

Last weekend Abbey & Anya represented HSC at the ITCA Topper Coastal Championships @ Snettisham Beach Sailing Club, a lovely club with friendly welcome, with the lovely weather it was like being away on holiday. After completing 3 races each day Abbey came overall 3rd place & Anya 16th place, a big well done to them both, also to SBSC for a great event & hospitality. I was on safety duty on the water.

On the broad the weed continues to be a problem, as with other areas / clubs it is growing & spreading very quickly this year, we continue to speak to the relevant bodies to see what can be done. We will continue to monitor it.

With a nice weekend approaching, have a great weekend, whether at the club or with family for Father’s Day.

Vice Commodore’s Clew

We are well into our season now and it is time to remind everyone about the social events that are coming up shortly.

Firstly, we have our ‘Summertime and Wine’ event on Saturday 24 June to follow the pursuit races. This will be a barbeque with drinks available at the bar. You can order a jumbo sausage and a burger (veg option burger if preferred) and the cost will be £7. It helps if we can have names in advance but we can take a limited number of orders on the day if necessary. We can also provide half portions, sausage or burger, for the smaller appetites. Let me know what you want before 21 June if you can.

The following week is Keelboat Weekend and we have ‘A Night at the Movies’ on Sat 01 July, which will be films from the Club archives with hot dogs and popcorn available, all in the Clubhouse.

Not far after that comes the Club Regatta and Horning Week, and you will find the social events being planned are all listed in the White Book. I will let you know which events need pre booking nearer the time, but for now make a note in your diaries as we hope to see most members during Horning Week, which as well as the sailing is the biggest social event of the season.

This weekend’s activities

Saturday 17th June we will start the Sundown series. All are welcome to take part in this informal race series (keelboats/dinghies) and we start at 4pm. As Will has said this is also a great opportunity to practice running the line/safety boat practice so please do come down and get involved.

On Sunday 18th June, we will see racing continue on the Broad, following Programme C.

We will be following the 6/3 start sequence (instead of 10/5 minutes). The aim of this is to reduce time waiting on the Broad – but it will mean that some starts will be a little earlier, so please arrive in plenty of time for the tow to the Broad.

The start sequence is as follows:

Series 1:

10.30am       Reedlings

10.33am       Yeomans

10.36am       Rebels

10.39am       Yares & Bures

10.42am       Juniors & Allcomers “B” & “C”

10.51am       Cruisers (continue into series 2)

Series 2: Start 11.15am earliest

Series 3: Start 12.00pm earliest

The later series will start at a time determined by the OOD. Starts will be separated by a 3 minute interval, except Cruisers with a 9 minute interval.

After racing on Sunday, we have one of our ‘Social Sundays’ and it would be great to see members continuing to enjoy the Club into the afternoon. So why not come down, enjoy yourself, have a social sail/paddleboard if you wish – and just enjoy spending time with friends – especially as the forecast looks so promising!

By way of reminder, you can download the full racing programme from the HSC website here.

On Monday 18th June we will restart our weekly paddleboarding sessions. All are welcome at these informal evenings where we usually go for a relatively short paddle, and just enjoy each others’ company. If you’d like to come down but don’t have a board, please get in touch and we’ll see what we can do. We start at 6pm.

Spring Regatta Pursuit Race – from Toby Fields

Pursuit Race – Saturday 24th June (briefing 1:30pm)

On Saturday 24th June in the afternoon, we have our annual Pursuit Race Regatta on the river. We will use your HSC handicap to decide how long the race is for you. At the end, the boat that is leading when the time runs out wins the race. The Pursuit race is spectator-friendly with viewing from the club front and no handicaps to worry about.

Dinghies, Keelboats and even the occasional River Cruiser have competed in the past. Younger members need to be comfortable racing alongside larger craft at times, like on a regular Sunday.

We will be running two pursuits, each around 40-50 minutes long depending on class of boat. Entry is free. You will be told your start time when you enter with us on the day.

After the two races are over, at around 17:00, there will be a social event and bbq, tickets and details will be coming up elsewhere. You will need to pre-book food but not entry to the races. The bar will also open in the later afternoon.

I hope to see many different classes represented in this year’s Pursuits. There are also two club trophies that are awarded for these races. Please ask if you have any further questions.

Toby Fields (AOD/Timekeeper)

13:30 – Briefing for Competitors

Approx. 14:00 – Pursuit Race 1 starts

Approx 15:00 – Pursuit Race 1 ends – the galley will be open for refreshments for competitors and spectators all afternoon.

Approx 15:30 – Pursuit Race 2 starts

Approx 16:30 – Pursuit Race 2 ends

17:00 onwards - Social event and BBQ.

Helm & Crew Opportunities

Don’t forget that I am co-ordinating helms & crews who wish to get on the water... so, if you are a helm looking for a crew, or a crew looking to get on the water now, please contact me (Holly) on holly.hancock@me.com with your requirements and contact details, I will do my best to coordinate these requests. At the moment we have more helms looking for crews, than crews looking for opportunities – so if you are keen to get on the water, it’s a great time to do so!

Could you contribute to Jibsheet?
